Social Media Killed the Teenager I got the opportunity to be a director on the Fashion Forecasting Committee for TREND Magazine, which is a student-run fashion magazine at Iowa State University. I worked closely with two other directors and a committee to style a photoshoot for the magazine. The theme of this issue was “Raw Form.” As a director, we were challenged to create a shoot that represented a barrier preventing individuals from being the best versions of themselves. Because of a strong passion towards the effects social media has on many people, we decided to take our shoot in that direction.
We incorporated a lot of symbolism in our shoot. To name just a few, we accessorized our models with phone cords, which demonstrated the physical danger to mental health that social media creates. Each model represented each major platform: red, blue and purple. The red signifies YouTube, purple represents Instagram and blue is tied with Twitter. We used a projector to represent the two selves individuals battle with, their online presence with their actual self. The true self was represented wearing all white and a bare face, representing purity. The projected images had the models styled in bold colors and dramatic makeup. This work exemplifies my ability to orchestrate a photoshoot that creates a story, which is meaningful and reinforces the theme of the entire magazine.

Grit’s Pasture The overall theme of the magazine was ‘rediscovered youth.’ We challenged ourselves to create a shoot that honed in on the wonderment a child has with animals. Our shoot took place in a barn; we incorporated pig-tails, denim fabrics, subtle florals, and other details to portray a child-like feel. We also wanted to concurrently style the shoot to be eclectic yet chic. Our challenge was to create a shoot that felt rustic, yet we wanted it to still maintain a high-end aesthetic. This work exemplifies my ability to lead and develop a photoshoot, while also being flexible with unforeseen challenges. Animals can be unpredictable and hard to work with, we often had to take many shots to get the perfect one! We also dealt with extremely uncomfortable tempurtures. The name of our shoot was inspired by the woman who allowed us to use her animals and barn for our shoot.

Prospective Noise - I took part in the story styling team for issue 25. In this position, we received stories from the editorial team and developed content for their articles. We worked together within our committee to develop separate shoots for seven different stories. We determined locations, styled models, and gathered props to develop visuals for each article.
Champions Train. Fashion Reigns. - I was involved in the Fashion Forecasting committee for this issue. We collaborated as a committee to conceptualize a shoot to represent the trend of athleisure. We kept hair and makeup simple to keep the focus on the garments. The location was in a gym to play off of the aesthetic of the shoot. There was also a studio shoot for a few of the looks, which were the styles that had a slightly more edgy feel.
