DIY: Heart Jeans

How to create jeans everyone will <3

I was browsing pintrest, when I came across a really sweet pair of jeans. I never shy away from pieces that seem 'too loud' to some people. In fact, I love wearing items that make a statement and are unique. These multi color heart jeans stuck out right away, and I knew I had to give it a try.

The first step I took was visiting a local thrift store. I went to a place called "Unique," located in New Hope, Minnesota. This is a huge thrift store, so give yourself plenty of time to browse. I would highly recommend this store if you are looking for jeans, they had so many! I ended up with a very heavy arm full of potential candidates for my project.

I ended up going with a pair of Lee jeans. They are medium wash bootcut jeans, with a very high waist. I love the high wasted look, but they were clearly out of style. I was excited to work on them to see how they would turn out!

The materials I used were foam brushes, fabric paint, scissors, and a sharpie. The first step is cutting out a heart shape that you want on your jeans. You can use this to help trace the shape on your jeans using the sharpie. My friend did star shapes instead of hearts, which I liked a lot too.

I then used the foam brushes to fill in all of the heart outlines. It took a long time. I had to add a few layers to each color to make the color appear more solid. The green and yellow required the most amount of layers.

I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I accidentally painted out of the lines many times. I had freak out moments, when I would accidentally get paint on other parts of the jeans, but quickly adding water and scarping as much off as you can pretty much eliminates the pigment.

The sharpie also created some problems. It is really hard to cover up, so I might recommend using a silver sharpie, as I feel like it would be easier to cover up with paint.

Next time I paint on fabric, I'm probably also going to use a different type of brush. The foam really stuck to the fabric, and It got difficult to brush the paint on. The bulky size of the brush also got difficult to be precise with the hearts. I ended up cutting the foam brushed to make them smaller shapes.

Once I completed the jeans, I cut the bottoms off and frayed them a little bit. I felt like this made the jeans appear more stylish, which also gave them a little flare.

Overall, this project was really fun! I love the way the jeans turned out, and I am super excited to wear them this summer! I learned a lot from this, as it is my first DIY. I for sure plan on doing more in the future so stay tuned.
